Lessons from the Wild eBook

In Lessons from the Wild, Dutch wildlife veterinarian Martine takes you into the heart of the African wilderness. Her gripping and often breathtaking adventures with wild animals reveal what they can teach us about being human.

Living among gorillas in the rainforests of Gabon, Martine discovers what it truly means to be part of an ecosystem. In Cameroon, chimpanzees become her unexpected teachers. Near Kruger National Park in South Africa, she runs a thriving wildlife veterinary practice, where lions, rhinos, elephants and giraffes are among her daily patients. Confronting the realities of wildlife protection, she faces constant danger – from fighting rhino poaching to narrowly escaping an attack by an African buffalo.

This personal journey shows how reconnecting with nature and stepping beyond our comfort zones can strengthen our resilience, courage and wellbeing. At the same time, the urgency and complexity of nature conservation become strikingly clear.

‘This book is about connection, inner strength, conscious living, service and love – a captivating guide to living with purpose. A fascinating book and warmly recommended!’

Irene van Lippe-Biesterfeld, Princess of the Netherlands

‘Lessons from the Wild is a super inspiring book that reminds me once again how small we are within the immense richness of nature.
